Mr & Mrs Priestley visited the American South-West in the late autumn of 1954 with a set purpose: to observe and reflect upon man, as a social animal (i) in primitive society, a form of which still persists in New Mexico, (ii) in the booming technocracy of mid-twentieth century Texas. It has produced, as one would expect, a wise, witty and highly original book– book that will certainly delight as it will surely disturb its readers.
