Though only a few of the poems in this collection (Porter’s seventh) are directly autobiographical, the whole book is haunted by one event–the death of his wife at the end of 1974. ‘The cost of seriousness will be death’ says the title poem. Porter was made a Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature in 2007, an honour only given to a maximum of ten living writers.
