The Ballad of the Outer Dark
Watkins, Vernon (ed. Gwen Watkins; intro. Kathleen Raine)
A selection of unpublished and uncollectd poems by Vernon Watkins’ widow, Gwen, drawn from the large number left at his death. Kathleen Raine’s introduction notes, ‘Wales gave Vernon Watkins muyth and landscape; but he is also one of the last poets to write the English language of the educated and the cultured. He makes no concessions to a demotic revolution. He belongs to past and to future, transmitting words he inherited without diminution of meaning and value. He is perhaps a national, but not a popular poet; certainly a great poet.
