Missionary Labours and Scenes in Southern Africa
Missionary Labours and Scenes in Southern Africa
Moffat, Robert (illus. G. Baxter)
£300.00
“In 1842 his Missionary Labours and Scenes in Southern Africa appeared, to become a widely read Victorian missionary classic” (DNB). Robert Moffat (1795-1883) was a missionary in Africa and linguist. One of Moffat’s greatest achievements was the translation and printing of the New Testament into Tswana, for the use of his converts. In 1840, the young missionary David Livingstone met Moffat in London. Encouraged by him, he went out to South Africa in 1841 and visited the Moffat’s at Kuruman. In 1845 he married Moffat’s daughter Mary. A fascinating account which ran into many printings. With a fold-out map of southern Africa, and twenty engravings, including a colour frontispiece, Mission Premises, printed in oil colours, by George Baxter.
