These three plays were all written in 1912 and premiered in the next two years. Androcles and the Lion is Shaw’s retelling of the story of a slave saved by the requiting mercy of a lion as he was with many Christians being led to the Colosseum to die. He survived because the lion who was intended to tear him apart recognised him as the man who once extracted an agonising thorn from his paw. Pygmalion would become globally renowned as the basis for the musical and film, My Fair Lady.
